While all states have their own unique features, Nevada really stands out from the crowd. One of the most obvious differences is the fact of legalized gambling and the accompanying glitz and entertainment that make the Silver State a vacation destination for adults from around the world. But like the proverbial iceberg, that flashing neon side of Nevada is just one small part of what makes our state so special. It’s true that Nevada draws in the big celebrities and performers but the unsung heroes of our past and present are just as fascinating. The world-class resorts are household names throughout the country, but our small ranching, farming and mining communities also have their own stories to tell. The natural history and geography of Nevada will astound you. For example, did you know that Nevada is the most mountainous state in the contiguous U.S.? Or that the watersheds of Northern Nevada drain into neither the Pacific nor the Atlantic oceans? That the official state fossil is the Ichthyosaur? Nevada is the land of the high desert and the Great Basin, and its history is a microcosm of the American West, from the Native Americans who have called this land home for thousands of years through the Westward expansion, the Civil War, the 20th century and on into today.
